So, most commands are the same, for example :

wou@linuxmint ~ $ lsb_release -a

VMware tools installation procedure

Pay your attention : installing VMware Tools from vSphere Client 5.5 update 2 doesn’t work.

Trust me, don’t waste your time, the only way to succeed is to install the “open-vm-tools” latest release !

As usual, start by updating your server :

Connected as “root”

linuxmint ~ # id
uid=0(root) gid=0(root) groups=0(root)

Launch

linuxmint ~ # apt-get update

Then, install required software

“gcc” compiler is already installed :

linuxmint ~ # dpkg -l gcc
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name Version Architecture Description
+++-============================-===================-===================-=============================================================
ii gcc 4:4.8.2-1ubuntu6 amd64 GNU C compiler

Install “autoconf” :

linuxmint ~ # apt-get install autoconf

“linux-header” and “linux-image” already installed :

linuxmint ~ # dpkg -l | egrep “linux-header|linux-image”
ii linux-headers-3.16.0-38 3.16.0-38.52~14.04.1 all Header files related to Linux kernel version 3.16.0
ii linux-headers-3.16.0-38-generic 3.16.0-38.52~14.04.1 amd64 Linux kernel headers for version 3.16.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP
ii linux-image-3.16.0-38-generic 3.16.0-38.52~14.04.1 amd64 Linux kernel image for version 3.16.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP

OK now, let’s go on with VMTools

linuxmint ~ # apt-get install open-vm-tools

and after, you will see tools running from vSphere Client

linux mint VMTools
