Logon as root :

wou@ubuntu:~$ sudo bash
[sudo] password for wou:
root@ubuntu:~# id
uid=0(root) gid=0(root) groups=0(root)

Execute an update :

root@ubuntu:~# apt-get -y update

Here is my Ubuntu version :

root@ubuntu:~# lsb_release -a

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 15.04
Release: 15.04
Codename: vivid

dkms” (dynamic kernel  module support)  has been already installed on this virtual machine :

root@ubuntu:~# dpkg -l dkms
| Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name Version Architecture Description
ii dkms all Dynamic Kernel Module Support Framework

So, let’s go on with VMtools over “dkms” :

root@ubuntu:~# apt-get -y install open-vm-tools-dkms

Then, reboot :

root@ubuntu:~# shutdown -r now

VMtools are now up & running :
